Exhibition showcases African art and culture

To commemorate Africa day today, May 25, an exhibition initiated by L’echo Production with the support of the National Art and Craft Council (NACC) is taking place at the Carrefour des Arts gallery to showcase African art and culture.

The annual celebration is in commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which was eventually replaced by the African Union (AU) in 2002.

In his keynote address, Jacques Koui, Seychellois of Guinean origin, said Africa is a diversity of culture that should be celebrated and appreciated, and this is being done through the art exhibition organised to coincide with this year’s FetAfrik.

“So why do we celebrate FetAfrik every day? Because Seychelles is part of Africa. We are all Africans despite coming from a different country and origin.”

He added that by celebrating this day, Seychelles was celebrating its national heritage and thanked the FetAfrik committee for remaining steadfast since the 1980s.

“It went up, evolved and today it is still alive! It will continue!”

To launch the exhibition, executive director of the NACC, Jimmy Savy, noted the importance of all the elements that constitute the African culture and multinationalism.

“Africa plays an integral part in the Seychellois culture. It plays a part in what makes us ‘kreol’.”
The launch ceremony included a short fashion parade of African clothing by two local models and traditional African music.

Also present was the secretary general for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, David Andre.
