A Story of Hope, Freedom and New Beginnings

Nestled high within the lush forests of Morne Seychellois National Park, the Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town stand as one of Seychelles’ most important cultural and historical landmarks.

The site was established in 1876 by the Church Missionary Society as a boarding school and settlement for liberated African children rescued from slave ships intercepted in the Indian Ocean by the British Royal Navy. At a time when the illegal slave trade continued despite the abolition of slavery, Seychelles became a place of refuge for thousands of liberated Africans brought to its shores. Many of these children had been separated from their families and communities and arrived in Seychelles seeking a new beginning.

Venn’s Town provided them with shelter, education, vocational training, and spiritual guidance. The settlement quickly became a place where young survivors of the slave trade could rebuild their lives and prepare for the future.

The mission included dormitories, classrooms, staff residences, workshops, agricultural lands, and a cemetery. Although the settlement operated for less than 30 years before relocating to Bel Ombre in 1894, its legacy lives on through the descendants of the children who studied there and through the enduring influence they had on the development of modern Seychellois society.

Today, the stone ruins, pathways, terraces, and cemetery remain powerful reminders of a remarkable chapter in the history of freedom, resilience, and human dignity.

Outstanding Universal Value

Why is Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town Important?

Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town tells a story that resonates far beyond the shores of Seychelles. It is a place that bears witness to one of humanity’s darkest chapters—the slave trade—and to one of its most inspiring stories of recovery, resilience, and hope.

The site represents the journey from enslavement to freedom. It was here that liberated African children were given an opportunity to learn, grow, and create new lives after experiencing the trauma of slavery.

Venn’s Town also played an important role in shaping modern Seychelles. Children from different parts of Africa came together in this unique environment, blending their traditions, languages, beliefs, and skills with European missionary influences. This cultural exchange contributed significantly to the development of Seychellois Creole culture and identity.

The values nurtured at Venn’s Town—freedom, dignity, justice, education, resilience, and cultural adaptation—continue to form an important part of Seychelles’ national story Today.

UNESCO World Heritage Nomination

Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town is currently being nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has the potential to become Seychelles’ first UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. The nomination recognises the site’s exceptional significance as a testimony to the history of the slave trade, the liberation of enslaved peoples, and the emergence of a new Creole society in the Indian Ocean.

If inscribed, the site will join a distinguished group of heritage places around the world recognised for their Outstanding Universal Value and their importance to humanity as a whole.
