Minister Amanda Bernstein

Message from the Minister for Tourism and Culture International Museum Day – 18 May 2026

On the occasion of International Museum Day 2026, I extend my warm greet- ings to all museum professionals, cultural practitioners, partners, and members of the public across Seychelles.

This year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” speaks powerfully to the role museums continue to play as spaces of dialogue, understanding, learn- ing, and unity. In an increasingly complex and fast-changing world, museums stand as bridges between peoples, generations, and cultures; preserving our collective memory while helping to shape a more connected and compassionate future.

This year’s celebration carries particular significance for our nation, as Sey- chelles commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Independence, a historic mile- stone that invites us to reflect on our journey, our shared identity, and the values that continue to bind us together as one people.

Our museums sit at the very heart of this national reflection. They safeguard the stories, struggles, achievements, and traditions that have shaped Seychelles over the past five decades and beyond. They remind us of where we have come from, celebrate the resilience and diversity of our people, and inspire future generations to cherish and protect our cultural heritage.

As we mark fifty years of nationhood, our museums are far more than reposi- tories of the past; they are living institutions that strengthen national pride, foster cultural understanding, support education, and contribute meaningfully to social cohesion and sustainable development.

I wish to pay special tribute to our museum staff, historians, researchers, edu- cators, volunteers, and cultural partners, whose dedication and professionalism ensure that our heritage remains alive, accessible, and meaningful for all. I also encourage every Seychellois, and our youth in particular, to visit our museums, engage with their exhibitions and educational programmes, and take pride in the remarkable journey of our nation.

As we celebrate both International Museum Day and fifty years of Seychelles’ Independence, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to preserving our her- itage and strengthening our museums as spaces that connect our past, enrich our present, and inspire our future.

Happy International Museum Day 2026.

Mrs. Amanda Bernstein
