Seychelles Proudly Joins the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea

Following the official opening ceremony on the 19th July 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee commenced its formal deliberations at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Centre (BEXCO).

The Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Mr. Lazare Eloundou Assomo, presented the Centre’s annual report, highlighting progress in supporting World Heritage nominations, strengthening conservation and sustainable site management, responding to emergencies affecting heritage properties, and enhancing cooperation among UNESCO

the Advisory Bodies and States Parties.

The Seychelles delegation also participated in a host-country side event on World Heritage governance in the digital age, which explored how digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging innovations are transforming heritage documentation, monitoring, conservation and decision-making.

The session also provides an important platform to strengthen international cooperation, exchange knowledge and best practices, and enhance national capacity in heritage conservation and management.

This year’s participation is particularly significant as Seychelles continues its efforts towards the nomination of the Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town, the country’s first proposed cultural property for consideration for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
